Fire Safety Awareness

Everyone in the workplace needs to know how to handle emergency situations.  Before a new staff member starts at work they should have the right skills and knowledge to react safely in an emergency situation.  This unaccredited training provides the participant with the knowledge for response to an emergency in the workplace.

This course is scaffolded on the information in the AS 3745—2010 Planning for emergencies in facilities, for training of occupants at a workplace, while providing a learning pathway for Warden’s to the PUAFER005 Operate as Part of an Emergency Control Organisation nationally accredited course.

This course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies requiring evacuation may occur, ie; physical threat, fire, flood, structural collapse, chemical spills or other industrial accident.  Applicable to employees in the workplace within all industries and in all contexts

Entry requirements:

Participants must have the physical capacity to complete all practical demonstrations for the course, including being able to follow the directions of Wardens during emergencies.  Participants will also need oral and written communication skills to make an accurate verbal report to Wardens and complete a written incident report.

Training arrangements:

This workplace course is delivered in one two (2) hour full face to face session, this is a minimum timeframe, duration may extend to ensure learners completion.

The course is conducted in English with training delivered face to face, either on site or at our training rooms, at a time to suit the facility or the majority of the participants.  The course includes audio visual and written materials, and industry and individual participants are encouraged to include policies, procedures and documentation from their workplace, to better contextualise their learning.

Our educator assesses the participants application of skills and knowledge throughout the face to face session, through scenario, skill stations, written assessment and evacuation undertaken during the session, ie;

• Performance tasks
  • Undertake pre-emergency planning
  • Follow the directions of the command, control and coordination structure of the ECO in a simulated emergency
• Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:
  • Evacuation Plan checklist
• Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

The course may be delivered and assessed in a format supportive of the needs of ESL participants, and delivered in remote locations where workplace or other time restrictions preclude a single session attendance.

Students under 14 years of age must provide written permission to attend the course from their parent or guardian.

Optional Learning:

Alternately participants may choose to undertake the accredited Emergency Control courses for a Nationally recognised outcome.  For information on accredited training please contact our office or review our accredited courses.

Pathways include:

• PUAFER005 Operate as Part of an Emergency Control Organisation  - Wardens coordinate their workplace during an emergency as a member of the Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), and must comply with the requirements contained within the WHS Act, Australian Standard 3745 as well as 4083 and the workplace Emergency Plans.
• PUAFER006 Lead An Emergency Control Organisation, - Chief Wardens lead the Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) within their workplace during an emergency, and must comply with the requirements contained within the WHS Act, Australian Standard 3745 as well as 4083 and the workplace Emergency Plans..

We also offer a program integrated within one of your 4/12 Emergency Response Exercise's, which would include Chief warden training  +  Warden training  +  Occupant Safety training, which could engage the Emergency Planning Committee (EPC) and Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) as well as Occupants and Workers of the workplace as detailed in AS3745 and AS4083.

Tutors and learning support:

Training is conducted in English and participants must possess functional written and spoken English skills.  The course is delivered by local, qualified Tutors, who hold a current Police Clearance, understand the context of practice and embrace the principles of cultural safety in their teaching.

Fees are payable though the website or at our office by credit card (Visa/MC), cash or purchase order, and may be tax deductible to eligible students.  Should the NT Government and industry bodies make Scholarships available, we will assist you to apply.

• Class size is limited to a max of 10 participants - unless otherwise arranged
• Learning program integrated with the development or review of Emergency Plans is price on application
• Remote travel is additional to the course cost, and will be quoted on request

Course subjects:

This course has been designed for individuals who are required to implement an emergency response as specified in the facility emergency procedures or specified by a person at a higher level in the emergency control organisation (ECO).  Individuals who undertake this work will be following instruction of the command, control and coordinate structure of the ECO.  It includes undertaking pre-emergency planning, taking appropriate actions in an emergency and assisting with post emergency activities.

The course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard 3745 and Australian Standard 4083.

Participants in this course will learn how to effectively

• Apply Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements
• Assist occupants who may require assistance
• Assist with post emergency response activities
• Comply with legislation, industry standards, codes of practice and regulations
• Contribute to facility emergency planning
• Give clear directions to occupants and visitors
• Implement safe work practices
• Follow emergency response directions
• Respond to Warden signals and warnings
• Use communications systems
• Wear required emergency control organisation identification

LLN support can be provided to participants, as well as additional face to face time with the trainer/assessor on request.
