This Chief Warden course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies requiring evacuation may occur, ie; physical threat, fire, flood, structural collapse, chemical spills or other industrial accident. Applicable to employees in the workplace within all industries and in all contexts.
The following units are awarded to successful participants in this course; PUAFER006 Lead an emergency control organisation and PUAFER005 Operate as part of an emergency control organisation, more information can be found at Training.gov.au.
Entry requirements:
This course includes the prerequisite PUAFER005 Operate as part of an emergency control organisation unit of competency. Participants must have the physical capacity to complete all practical demonstrations for the course, including commanding, controlling and coordinating of facility emergency response procedures. This includes wearing suitable identification, assisting occupants and using communications systems. Participants will also need oral and written communication skills to make an accurate verbal report to emergency services and complete a written incident report. You must have internet access and a current browser, as well as skills sufficient to follow a video learning program, to complete the on-line pre-course work, as well as assessments in-class.
Training and assessment arrangements:
This accredited course is delivered in one six (6) hour full face to face session, this is a minimum timeframe, duration may extend to ensure learners completion.
The course is conducted in English with training delivered face to face, either on site or at our training rooms, at a time to suit the facility or the majority of the participants. The course includes audio visual and written materials, and industry and individual participants are encouraged to include policies, procedures and documentation from their workplace, to better contextualise their learning.
Our educator assesses the participants application of skills and knowledge throughout the face to face session, through scenario, skill stations, written assessment and evacuation undertaken during the session, ie;
- Performance tasks:
- Prepare and plan for an emergency
- Lead an ECO in a fire emergency
- Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:
- Facility emergency plan (extract)
- Emergency evacuation incident and debrief form
- Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions
The course may be delivered and assessed in a format supportive of the needs of ESL participants, and delivered in remote locations where workplace or other time restrictions a single session attendance.
Students under 14 years of age must provide written permission to attend the course from their parent or guardian.
Educators and learning support:
Training is conducted in English and participants should possess functional written and spoken English skills. The course is delivered by local, Industry experts and qualified Tutors, who hold a current Police Clearance, understand the context of practice and embrace the principles of cultural safety in their teaching.

Course subjects:
The course applies to individuals who may be required to make decisions about the safety of occupants of a facility during an emergency and to give instructions on the priority order for responding to an emergency incident, including command, control and coordination of facility emergency response procedures and concluding the facility emergency incident. They may also be required to act as the primary liaison with emergency services. Individuals who undertake this role will generally be members of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), acting as chief wardens, deputy chief wardens and communications officers.
The course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard 3745 and Australian Standard 4083. It applies to employees in the workplace within all industries and in all contexts
Participants in this course will learn how to effectively
- Apply Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements
- Brief emergency services personnel
- Command, control and coordinate facility emergency response procedures
- Comply with legislation, industry standards, codes of practice and regulations concluding facility emergency
- Give clear directions and keep others informed throughout the emergency in accordance with facility emergency plan
- Identify evacuation assembly areas
- Implement facility emergency response procedures
- Interpret information displayed on emergency control indicator equipment including fire indicator panel, building management system and security management system
- Prepare for emergencies in a facility
- Respond to emergency signals and warnings appropriately
- Undertake pre-emergency planning
